The Islamic slaughtering of animals/birds is a blessing for the animals / birds and the human beings. Taking the name of Allah (swt) by saying the phrase ‘Bismillahi Allahu Akbar’ at the time of slaughter is meant to emphasize the sanctity of life and that all life belongs to Allah swt, it serves to prevent cruelty and is a mercy for the animal slaughtered and its purified meat (due to flowing of the blood) – a blessing for human beings. Several measures should be taken when slaughtering the animal/bird. In this regard the Prophet (salallahu alaihi wasallam) said “Allah (swt) calls for mercy in everything, so be merciful when you slaughter; sharpen your blade to relieve the pain” The Prophet (salallahu alaihi wasallam) said “Not to sharpen the knife in front of the animal nor slaughter an animal in front of another”.
